Over the past 20 years I’ve had an amazing career in the consumer electronics industry launching many new products, technologies and applications that have truly changed how we all work and play. I've always loved this industry and like many of you have an insatiable appetite for acquiring these new products as technology applications unfold at a rapid pace.
A couple of years ago I started looking into the environmental movement's concern of this industry’s sustainability practices. I really didn't know much about it at first but upon discovering that U.S. households now own an average of 27 consumer electronics devices (and growing); soon to represent 25% of our household energy consumption (about the same as heating/ cooling), and the fact that we upgrade many of these devices every 1-3 years (computers, TV's and cell phones) yet only recycle about 9% of our old ones, these concerns for the most part seemed justified.
Upon further discovery it became apparent that the greening of the consumer electronics and computer industries was quite complex with many different definitions and standards emerging. I thought, how difficult it must be for consumers and businesses to get simple and relevant information on a product in order to make a better choice for themselves, the environment, and for the sustainability of the industry.
In 2006 I started Green Electronics with the sole purpose of creating the best and simplest one-stop-shop for consumers and businesses to source and purchase the greenest of all consumer electronics and computer products available on the market.
Each product's GREEN-SPECS™ are displayed in order to provide our customers with the trust and confidence that their consumer electronics and computer hardware purchase is based on prevailing worldwide compliance standards, classifications and definitions on what classifies them to be considered green or greener.
As for 'JohnnyGreen' well that’s me. I try to bring a little common sense to the debate while supporting these emerging green standards, innovations and manufacturer milestones that are truly making a difference towards a more sustainable and healthy future for us and the electronics industry.
And in the simplest of terms, I believe buying green electronics simply means "Buying it Right the First Time".
